Slow Fashion: What Is It and Why Is It Important?

by EW Group on May 29, 2018

The idea of slow fashion is not only a trend that’s taking over the world, it’s a solution to real-life social problems that affect each and every one of us. We live in a society that bombards us with information 24/7 and urges us to constantly purchase and accumulate things. This phenomenon in the fashion industry is called fast fashion. Fast fashion is all about trends that change with each new season, offering up clothes and accessories that are affordable yet low quality and often end up in the rubbish bin after a short time.

When shopping for that perfect little black dress, for example, how many of us actually think about where that dress was made? Who had to put energy and work into manufacturing it, and how much were they paid? It’s normal to look at price tags and choose more affordable clothes, but it’s also important to remember the actual cost of the item we’re purchasing. The problem with fast fashion is that it forces factories to produce more at lower costs, with factory workers earning barely enough to survive under horrible conditions while large, global clothing companies reap huge profits. Workers in developing markets get paid next to nothing for that cheap t-shirt we pick off the shelf and wear maybe five times. So what is the solution?

The solution to fixing this global problem is to purchase clothes more consciously. When you’re thinking of buying a new piece of clothing, look at the price tag – it’ll tell you everything you need to know about it, just like the ingredients label on food products. It shows you where that item was produced and what materials were used to make it. With this information, you can easily tell if the people manufacturing it have been paid fairly or not.

Statistics reveal that the great majority of women only wear about 20% of the clothes in their closet. Most of the time, clothes still have their price tags on them or have only been worn once or twice once you start to dress more mindfully, you’ll find that you only purchase clothes that you’ll actually wear often.

But how can you be more mindful of what you purchase and what you wear?

Step 1

Know your personal style and wear clothes that really suit you. Don’t compromise and chose items of clothing that bring out the best of your body shape.

Step 2

Buy capsule clothes that you can combine with others to create various outfits. After evaluating your wardrobe and doing a clean-up, decide what you need, such as a white shirt, basic trousers or a little black dress. Write a list for when you go shopping.

Step 3

Support local designers. Buy dresses produced in your country or in Europe from designers who understand the slow fashion concept. You can also contact them if you have any questions and get detailed information on where they source their materials from and how their supply chain works.

Step 4

Try and be creative with the clothes you already have. Good quality clothing lasts longer and can be combined with other basics to create an endless number of outfits. Use accessories in new ways to reflect your particular mood and style.

EW is dedicated to the concept of slow fashion and creates clothes that are specially designed to suit different tastes. Take a look at our online store and begin creating your own capsule wardrobe!
